The History of Yoga
The History of Yoga
Yoga is the ancient science to take the seeker from individual consciousness and suffering to ultimate liberation – enlightenment. When we begin our journey toward yoga enlightenment seems quite out of reach; however, whilst embarking on such an inspirational journey, one must follow the guidance from those who came before, the seers, sages, gurus and teachers who attained enlightenment. Thousands of years before, the yogi masters would extend their teachings verbally to aspiring yogis and to those who showed their willingness to learn from the masters.
Hatha Yoga Asana (the physical practice of yoga) with its systematic form emerged from India around the 6th century.
Around 2500 years ago an enlightened sage named Patanjali (pronounced Pu-tun-ju-li - The u as in cup) wrote a sacred text of verses called the Yoga Sutras. Prior to this written sacred text, the teachings of Yoga were only passed down verbally from Guru to student.
The Yoga Sutras consist of four parts or padas, each with detailed steps to work diligently toward the goal of full realization, or enlightenment.
Patanjali outlines a defined 8-limbed path toward the goal of liberation which include:
- Yamas – Moral ethical codes
- Niyamas – Inner observances
- Asana – The physical postures of Yoga Practice
- Pranayama – The science of breath control.
- Pratyahara – Withdrawing the senses
- Dharana - Concentration
- Dhyana - Meditation
- Samadhi – Enlightenment
